As stated on the Programme Trusts, SEAMEO BIOTROP has a major role on the development of biotechnology particularly in Indonesia. The Centre has conducted several research project as well as product development on or related with biotechnology. The centre has genetic studies widely employed molecular biology techniques on several plants such as sandal wood (gaharu), mangosteen. A number of agricultural products such as potatoes, banana, pineapple as well as medicinal plants and ornamental plants has been multiplied in tissue culture techniques for breeding. This database section consist of several genetic resources (plants in the collection field, planlets in the laboratory) as well as techniques, manuals and procedures on the use of biotechnology as a tool for plant breeding.
