Abstract :

Coming to this third quarter, improving the capacity of Vocational High School (SMK) human resources still became our primary concern. The Centre conducted several training courses, particularly in the field of agricultural development, including a family farming training activity for eight Cambodian vocational school teachers in June. Between July-September 2019, the Centre conducted a series of biology-based training activities for SMK teachers from across the country, supported by the Directorate of SMK Development of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. The Centre also held training courses on mapping and disaster mitigation and on acoustic technology application for school teachers in July and in August, respectively.

In the middle of 2019, our Centre held two Quarterly Public Seminars by presenting two experts, namely Prof Dr Mohammad Winugroho, MSc, for the topic of ‘Farmers-owned Enterprise for Independent Indonesian Farmers’ and Prof Robert A. Samson for the topic of ‘Mycotoxins in Fermented Foods’. The mycotoxin seminar was conducted back to back with a training course on identification of mycotoxin-producing fungi for 26 participants coming from various institutions.

We were proud to have Dr Soekisman Tjitrosemito, our Affiliated Scientist, being awarded the prestigious Asian-Pacific Weed Science Society (APWSS) Lifetime Achievement Award 2019 during 27th APWSS Conference 2019 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia this September. We also had Mr Samsul A. Yani, our Product Development and Services Department’s Manager, being awarded the SEAMEO Service Award 2019 during the 50th SEAMEO Council Conference 2019 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, last July. These awards were recognition and appreciation for their dedication and services to the fields they are expert in and to the organisation.

During the third quarter, we continued to share our expertise more widely by receiving 959 visitors from various institutions. A total of 22 Memoranda of Understanding with potential partners were sealed to strengthen mutual collaboration on human resources development, tropical biology research as well as applied research implementation at Schools level.

We also strengthened the relationship among our staff members by holding an inter-staff volleyball tournament and gained a mutual connection with other Centres’ staff members by participating in the 2nd Inter-centre Sport Championship hosted by SEAMEO QITEP in Science.

All proud moments during the 3rd quarter of this year are presented through the articles in this issue, and we further hope that more innovation and creativities will come up for better services.
