Abstract :
Management of seagrass ecosystem requires availability of information about actual condition of seagrass. The information generally has not been made available in Indonesia.

Remote sensing technology for seagrass mapping so far is limited to detect the existence of seagrass (location, the wide), has not come up with acquirement of information about coverage of seagrass. Therefore, a research is required to bring result from remote sensing imagery which is applicable in obtaining the information about seagrass coverage.

Aim of the research is to formulate mathematical relationship between seagrass coverage and depth invariant indices on Quickbird imagery. Transformation was done on multispectral bands which could detect seafloor objects, that are blue band, green band and red band.

The study area covered sea around Barranglompo Island and Barrangcaddi Island, westward of Makassar City, Indonesia. Various coverage of seagrass grow in the region.

Mathematical relationship between seagrass coverage and depth invariant indices was obtained by multiple linear regression method. Seagrass coverage (C) obtainable by transformation of depth invariant indices (Xij) on Quickbird imagery, that is with transformation equation :
C = 19.934 – 63.347 X12 + 23.239 X23.

Accuracy of the seagrass coverage which was obtained by transformation of depth invariant indices (Xij) on Quickbird imagery reaches of 75 %. Applying of depth invariant index transformation on Quickbird imagery yields "map of seagrass condition based on coverage".
