I trust this message finds you in good health and high spirits. Today, I am reaching out to you with a matter of utmost importance that has far-reaching implications for our society and the world at large, that is Biodiversity Education.

Biodiversity, the immense variety of life on Earth, is the foundation of a healthy and thriving planet. It not only sustains life as we know it but also contributes significantly to our economies, cultures, and overall well-being. However, in recent years, our planet has faced an alarming loss of biodiversity, threatening the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

SEAMEO BIOTROP, in collaboration with IPB University, conducted an International Webinar with theme Biodiversity Education: Strategic Plan to Enhance Marine Awareness on Monday, 22 May 2023. This webinar aimed to raise awareness and understanding of the significance of biodiversity and promote conservation, sustainable utilization, and equitable sharing of biodiversity benefits. A total of 404 participants, attended the webinar, consisting of students, lecturers, professionals, and policymakers from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.  

Biodiversity education offers an array of benefits, such as: 1) Awareness and understanding which educates individuals about the value of biodiversity, its role in ecological stability, and the consequences of its decline; 2) Conservation advocacy which empowers our community to advocate for policies and practices that support biodiversity conservation; 3) Sustainable practices which through education, we can instill sustainable habits and responsible consumption, essential for preserving biodiversity; 4) Scientific advancement which encourages curiosity and engagement in biodiversity research, fostering future scientists and conservationists.

By prioritizing biodiversity education, we not only fulfill our ethical duties but also contribute to the well-being of our planet and future generations. I propose that we collectively embrace and integrate biodiversity education within our educational programs, ensuring its incorporation into our institutional ethos. Let us take the lead in inspiring changes and nurturing a generation that will value, protect, and celebrate the incredible biodiversity that graces our planet.

SEAMEO BIOTROP will continue its efforts to enhance the center’s visibility by implementing the influence and responsibility to drive changes. Biodiversity education stands as a beacon of hope in mitigating the challenges posed by biodiversity loss. By integrating biodiversity education into our programs, curricula, and outreach initiatives, we can cultivate a generation of informed and environmentally conscious citizens.
