BIOTROP conducted a Training on Geographic Information System (GIS) Application for Spatial Data Management in its Campus on 6-10 February 2017.

The training was designed especially for 14 staff of Sub Directorates at the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries and National Committee of CTI-CFF Indonesia, toward enabling them to understand the basic concept of spatial database and Geographic Information System (data source, resolution and accuracy data and data projection), develop and maintain a geodatabase for marine in Indonesia using raster and vector data as well as be capable of doing layout and presentation of spatial data.

The training dealt with ways to prepare and manage spatial data, either in raster or vector format. Data source, type, scale and resolution used in the general application of spatial data were also discussed during the course.

Three BIOTROP staff, namely Harry Imantho, Mr Armaiki Yusmur, and Mr. Slamet Widodo, together with Mr Tarlan and Mr Nabil both from Institut Pertanian Bogor, and Mr Anggi Afif Muzaki, from Surya Institute shared their expertise on spatial database management as training resource persons. They specifically discussed about the concept of geographic data, GIS software applications, utilization of ArcGIS 10.x (ArcCatalog, ArcMap and ArcToolbox), utilization of marine application software (MARXAN and MOHID), methods for editing and analyzing data as well as desktop application of image and spatial analysis.

The training was supported and funded by Pacific Rim Innovation and Management Exponents. INC in cooperation with Asian Development Bank (ADB) as part of the RETA 7813: Coastal and Marine Resources Management in the Coral Triangle-Southeast Asia Project.
