Responding the Issue on Peatland, SEAMEO BIOTROP, IPB University and the As-Syafi'iyah Islamic University Holds a Regional Webinar

Bogor, 17 September 2021 – SEAMEO BIOTROP in collaboration with the Bogor Agricultural University and the As-Syafi'iyah Islamic University held a Regional Webinar entitled "What does The Peatland Ecosystem Face in The Future?" virtually, on 17 September 2021. This webinar aims to disseminate scientific information, latest methods and strategies for sustainable peatland management, the potential for sustainable use of wetlands and produce studies on innovation and technology in wetland optimization.

The webinar featuring two speakers, namely:
1. Ir. I.N.N Suryadiputra (Associate Expert of BIOTROP, Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency, and Senior Advisor to YLBA)
2. Prof. Dr. Ir. Bambang Hero Saharjo, M., Faculty of Forestry and Expert Staff of the Peat and Mangrove Restoration Agency (BRGM)

Dr. Zulhamsyah Imran, Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP as well as the Keynote Speaker in this activity said that peatland ecosystem faces an extremely challenges in both natural and anthropogenic factor determination.  He added that deforestation and converted to be various activities for human well fare reason have increased without pay attention how to save peatland ecosystem and its biodiversity.  “Sometime we blame that increasing of global temperature in Earth Atmosphere that we are called it as global warming always blame the influence factor destruction of peatland ecosystem.  Nowadays, we have known that Government of Indonesia has developed food estate in several areas in Indonesia, Sumatera-Kalimantan-Papua Island.  We need to participate in this occasion to avoid the increasing of deterioration of natural peatland ecosystem”, he said.

Moderated by Dr. Ir. Naresworo Nugroho, MS, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry and Environment, IPB, this webinar was participated by 196 individuals from Indonesian, Filipino, Cambodian, Bruneian, and Malaysian. This webinar was live streamed through https://youtu.be/jQUsjLi_OQA. (rf)
