Bogor, 3 January 2025 – As urbanization accelerates, the demand for sustainable agricultural practices within city environments becomes increasingly urgent. Addressing this need, SEAMEO BIOTROP is spearheading a Training of Trainers (ToT) program to equip future educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to drive urban agriculture initiatives forward. With 25 participants enrolled, the ToT will be conducted at SEAMEO BIOTROP from 3 February to 21 March 2025.
According to Mrs. Dewi Suryani, the ToT Coordinator, the program is meticulously designed to empower trainers with expertise in urban farming methodologies. By focusing on sustainable and innovative practices, participants will be prepared to transfer their knowledge effectively within their respective communities. The training incorporates interactive sessions, hands-on demonstrations, and knowledge-sharing discussions, ensuring a holistic learning experience.
The curriculum covers five key urban farming techniques, including hydroponics, aquaponics, mushroom cultivation, edible fish farming, and potted fruit cultivation (Tambulampot). These methods optimize space usage in urban settings while promoting eco-friendly and resource-efficient agricultural practices. By integrating these techniques, urban dwellers can contribute to enhanced food security, environmental sustainability, and self-sufficiency.
A crucial objective of the ToT program is to raise awareness of the benefits of urban agriculture. As participants implement their newfound knowledge, they are expected to inspire local communities to embrace sustainable farming, reducing reliance on external food supply chains and fostering healthier eating habits.
Dr. Elis Rosdiawati, Deputy Director for Administration of SEAMEO BIOTROP, emphasized the program's significance in her opening remarks: “This ToT program for urban agriculture serves as a powerful tool for empowering individuals and communities alike. By equipping trainers with essential skills and knowledge, we contribute to the development of greener, more resilient urban environments.”
The training is conducted by renowned experts in their respective fields: Hydroponic Cultivation by Prof. Dr. Arif Sabdo Yuwono (IPB University), assisted by Mr Andri S. and Mr Adi Juandi; Aquaponic Cultivation by Dr. Yani Hadiroseyani, MM (IPB University), supported by Mr Ujang Hariri and Mr Mahmuddin; Edible Mushroom Cultivation by Sumedi, S.Fil, MMA (PT Media Agro Merapi), with assistance from Sugih Mukti and Ramdani; Potted Fruit Cultivation (Tambulampot) by Dr. Supriyanto (SEAMEO BIOTROP), assisted by Mahpuddin and Suparno; and Edible Fish Farming by Dr. Yani Hadiroseyani, MM (IPB University), supported by Yana and Asep Syaefuddin.
With this well-structured ToT program, SEAMEO BIOTROP reaffirms its commitment to advancing urban agriculture and fostering sustainable food systems in growing urban spaces. As cities continue to expand, such initiatives play a pivotal role in shaping a future where urban farming thrives, enhancing food resilience and environmental well-being for generations to come.
