The 5th International Conference on Environment and Forest Conservation (ICEFC) took place from December 5 to 7, 2024, at IPB University. The event carried the theme “Forest Conservation in the Anthropocene: Adapting to New Environmental Realities.” Around 150 participants, including academics, researchers, and conservation practitioners from various countries, attended the conference.
“This conference serves as a multidisciplinary platform to address pressing global and local environmental challenges,” said Dr. Syafitri Hidayati, Chairwoman of the ICEFC 2024.
The term Anthropocene describes the current geological era marked by significant human impacts on Earth’s ecosystems. The conference explored innovative solutions for forest conservation amidst challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation.
Sri Widayanti, Acting Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, highlighted key topics discussed, including resource management technologies, sustainable forestry practices, biodiversity, human-wildlife interactions, and conservation policies. “With a multidisciplinary approach, we hope ICEFC 2024 generates practical and innovative solutions applicable in diverse global and local contexts,” she remarked.
Organized collaboratively by IPB University, SEAMEO BIOTROP, Mindanao State University, and Kastamonu University, the event aimed to foster international collaboration, enhance academic publications, and inspire future scientific gatherings.
Notable keynote speakers included Dr. Satyawan Pudyatmoko from Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry, Asst. Prof. Dr. Kobsak Wanthongchai from Kasetsart University, Thailand, and Prof. Rey Capangpangan from Mindanao State University, Philippines.
Beyond academic discussions, participants engaged in field tours, including visits to Bogor Botanical Gardens and SEAMEO BIOTROP’s eco-education sites. This hands-on approach emphasized the importance of integrating research with real-world conservation practices.
ICEFC 2024 reinforced its mission as a global forum for advancing forest and environmental conservation in response to evolving challenges.
