BIOTROP, in collaboration with the Indonesian Communication Forum on Mine Environmental Management (FORUM), held a Workshop on Improvement in the Performance of Indonesia Mining Environment Related to PROPER and Reclamation on 24 February 2015 at the Centre’s headquarter in Bogor.
The workshop was aimed to share good environmental practices in mining among the participating companies to improve their performance. The FORUM provides the platform to communicate environmental issues and help identify alternative solutions based on the experiences of member mining companies.
Participants of this workshop were from forty-one mining companies from larger islands in Indonesia, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic Indonesia, university students and lecturers, and also Balai Penelitian Teknologi Perbenihan Tanaman Hutan (Technology Research Unit Seedling of Forest Plants). This workshop was the first time discussion organized by Indonesian Communication Forum on Mine Environmental Management. The discussion topics were about how to improve Performance Rating Program in Environmental Management (PROPER) for mining companies with yearly evaluation from government. The workshop’s purpose was to get lesson learned about good mining practices to be possibly implemented in other mining sites. The expected output from this workshop was every participant to implement this workshop results in their institutions for a better reclamation practices. Research results from BIOTROP are important for industries to adapt and improve their environmental performance.
Resource persons in discussion about Performance Rating Program in Environmental Management were from PT. Tunas Inti Abadi; Pt. ADARO Indonesia Tbk.; PT. Mandiri Inti Perkasa; from PT. Bukit Asam Tbk.; and from PT. Sembayan Muara Bara. Resource persons in discussion about Mining Environmental Performance were from Indonesian Communication Forum on Mine Environmental Management about mine water management; Reclamation Department of Indonesian Communication Forum on Mine Environmental Management about reclamation test; BIOTROP about development of phytoremediation; and PT. ITM/BANPU about watershed rehabilitation with ratio 1:1.
