Bogor, August 18, 2024 - SEAMEO BIOTROP, in collaboration with the Central Executive Board of the Bogor Agricultural University Alumni Association (DPP HA IPB) and the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI), is preparing young, environmentally-focused leaders. A total of 150 prospective leaders participated in the SEASEL (Southeast Asia Sustainable Environment Leader) event, held at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), IPB Dramaga, on August 18, 2024.
“SEASEL aims to create environmentally-conscious leaders who are aware of their responsibilities towards sustainability and environmental preservation,” said Zulhamsyah Imran, Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, in his opening remarks.
The workshop aims to develop and strengthen leadership skills to tackle urgent environmental challenges and promote sustainable green initiatives in the Southeast Asian region.
“This event is highly beneficial for the younger generation in supporting future green innovations,” said Mr. Sukma Kamajaya, Secretary General of DPP HA IPB. Meanwhile, Prof. Jaffar Hafsah, Deputy Chairman of ICMI, emphasized that it is time for youth to take part in environmental activities. He hopes that SEASEL 2024 will produce leaders who care about environmental issues.
Speakers at the workshop included M. Ridwan, S.Hut., a Senior Researcher from the Center for Coastal and Marine Resources Studies, and Dr. Ir. Tjipta Purwita, MBA, IPU, ASEAN Eng., Deputy Chairperson for Organization and Finance at APHI. During the workshop, participants engaged in various interactive sessions covering topics such as environmental policy, green technology, natural resource management, and the role of leadership in climate change. They also participated in practical exercises that enhanced their understanding of environmental leadership.
The event began with the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, the IPB Hymn, and SEAMEO Color and SEAMEO Song. The event targeted students from various universities, both domestic and international, attending either in person or virtually via Zoom. Out of more than 250 applicants, 150 participants were selected to join this event.
By bringing together experts in the fields of environment and leadership, SEASEL 2024 serves as a platform for the younger generation to take an active role in sustaining the environment in Southeast Asia.
