SEAMEO BIOTROP Welcomes the Pertamina Research and Technology Innovation Team

On 5 July 2022, Pertamina's Research and Technology Innovation Team visited SEAMEO BIOTROP and its Tissue Culture Laboratory. This visit aimed to learn more about tissue culture technology for propagating seaweed. 

 

The Research and Technology Innovation Team from Pertamina was greeted by the Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, Dr Zulhamsyah Imran, who briefly explained SEAMEO BIOTROP to the visitors. The Research and Technology Innovation Team consisted of 7 people led by Mr. Ardianto. Pertamina had a plan to produce cleaner energy for 2060. In this plan, Pertamina searches for plant species that can absorb a lot of carbon. Seaweed is one of the plants that can absorb carbon  Mr. Ardianto mentioned that SEAMEO BIOTROP is well-known for having tissue culture technology and a laboratory to propagate seaweed seedlings. He also stated that SEAMEO BIOTROP is famous as one of the institutions that supply seaweed seedlings to seaweed entrepreneurs all over Indonesia.

 

Mr. Ardianto also talked about the potency of collaboration between Pertamina and SEAMEO BIOTROP. This collaboration is about developing seaweed seedlings using the tissue culture technique to obtain superior quality.

 

The proposed collaboration from Pertamina is in line with SEAMEO BIOTROP's collaboration programs, which seek new business opportunities for utilizing seaweed as food ingredients and raw materials in the pharmacy and cosmetics industries. The SEAMEO BIOTROP's program is expected to be among the strategic project for developing the local economy through the blue economy. (asa, sis)
