SEAMEO BIOTROP Conducts Survey of Rammang-Rammang Geopark Site: Promoting Research, Training, and Community Empowerment Based on the Environment

Maros, South Sulawesi – SEAMEO BIOTROP conducted a field survey of the Rammang-Rammang Geopark area in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. The survey was led by Deputy Director for Programs, Dr. Doni Yusri, along with Manager of the Human Centre and Innovation Department (HCID), Dewi Suryani, MM.

Rammang-Rammang is one of the geopark sites recognized as part of the UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp), renowned for its geological, ecological, and cultural richness. The survey aims to identify potential for developing scientific research programs, training, and community empowerment initiatives aligned with SEAMEO BIOTROP’s mandate in the conservation of tropical biodiversity.

In his statement, Dr. Doni Yusri noted that this activity marks the first step toward strengthening the role of geoparks as open-air laboratories supporting educational, conservation, and sustainable development initiatives.

"SEAMEO BIOTROP has a mandate to promote applied research, training, and community empowerment focused on the conservation of tropical biodiversity. Geoparks like Rammang-Rammang are strategic spaces that integrate ecological, cultural, and social aspects. Through research and training programs, we aim to build awareness and capacity among local communities to become the forefront of environmental conservation and the sustainable use of biological resources," said Dr. Doni.

In response to this initiative, Dr. Elis Rosdiawati, Director of SEAMEO BIOTROP, expressed her appreciation for the efforts to map the potential of Geopark areas to support regional and national agendas in conservation and sustainable development.

“Geoparks are not only important as natural conservation areas but also as spaces for learning and empowerment. SEAMEO BIOTROP is committed to making areas like Rammang-Rammang part of a network of education and innovation based on tropical biodiversity. This is a concrete example of our interdisciplinary approach in connecting science, ecology, and community well-being,” said Elis.

This activity is part of SEAMEO BIOTROP’s strategy to position geoparks as integration points between science, conservation, and community development based on tropical biodiversity.
